Challenge

The aim of the project was to predict the life of a steam turbine rotor used in combined cycles for the energy generation.

As the number of thermal loads along the day is increased, the life of the rotor decreases.

We analyzed the thermal field of the turbine in three different scenarios (1 to 3 loads per day), and after we coupled the results to the structural problem in order to find out the internal stresses produced by the temperature change.

We then performed a fatigue analysis to predict how many years could the device be working like this.
